Ett brev från kejsarinnan Alexandra...
Den 15 mars 1917 (den 2 mars enligt den gamla kalendern) abdikerade Rysslands sista tsar, Nikolai II, för både sig egen och sin sons Alekseys del till förmån till sin yngre bror Michail Alexandrovitj. Nikolais hustru, kejsarinnan Alexandra, nåddes av nyheten samma dag. Hon skall enligt uppgifter av Pierre Gilliard (tsarbarnens lärare i franska) först ha talat om nyheten för sina barn och sedan satt sig ner för att skriva till sin make. Detta är vad hon skrev:
My own beloved, precious Angel, light of my life,
My heart breaks, thinking of you all alone going through all this anguish, anxiety and we know nothing of you and you neither of us, so I am sending off Soloviev and Grammatin each with a letter, trusting one may reach you at last. I wanted to send an airplane, but the men have gone. The young men will tell you everything, so that I won't say anything about the situation. It is so abnormally hideous and the rapidity colossal with which events go. But I have the firm belief, which nothing can shake that all will be well somehow, especially since I got your wire this morning, the first ray of sunshine in this swamp.
The children lie quiet in the dark, Baby lies with them for several hours after lunch and sleeps. I spend my days upstairs and receive there too - the lift does not work since 4 days, a pipe burst - Olga 37.7, T 38.9 and ear begins to ache - Anastasia 37.2 (because of medicine they gave her for her head). Baby still sleeping, Ania 36.6 - their illness has been very heavy - God for sure sent it for the good somehow! They are so brave the whole time. I shall go out and say good morning to the soldiers now in front of the house. Don't know what to write, too many impressions, too much to say. Heart aches very much, but I don't need it, my spirits are quite up. Only suffer too hideously for you.

Jag har i flera år varit fascinerad över vilken inblick dessa sparade brev ger oss. Genom att läsa dessa personliga brev har vi möjlighet att ta del av deras mest privata tankar och åsikter, deras starka känslor och deras vardag. Samtidigt får jag lite dåligt samvete. Dessa brev är egentligen strikt privata, och de är inte ämnade för oss att läsa. Jag är dock tacksam för att de finns kvar! Breven möjliggör en djupare inblick i tsarfamiljens liv än den som framställs i olika skildringar och biografier.
